HARVEST REFLECTIONS
Harvest is a time when we are invited to stop and notice.
We live in a world where so much of what sustains us can easily become invisible. We go to the shops and find shelves filled with food; we turn on a tap and water flows; we flick a switch and the lights come on. Yet behind these everyday things lies an extraordinary web of people, soil, rain, sunshine, animals, plants and human work.
Harvest reminds us that we are not self-sufficient. We depend upon gifts we have not created and cannot take for granted. The food on our tables is, ultimately, a gift from God’s creation.
But Harvest is also a time for gratitude and responsibility. We give thanks not simply by saying thank you, but by asking how we use what we have been given. Do we waste unnecessarily? Do we care for the soil and the creatures with whom we share this earth? Do we remember those for whom there is not enough to eat?
And perhaps Harvest invites us to think about our own lives. There are seasons when we seem to be sowing, seasons when we wait, and seasons when we finally see something beginning to bear fruit.
So today, let us give thanks to God for the harvest, for the earth, for those who produce our food, and for the countless gifts that sustain us. And let our gratitude become generosity, care and hope.
Revd Gary.
