ST LUKE
This Sunday we commemorate St. Luke, but who was he?
St Luke the Evangelist was a first-century Greek physician and a loyal companion to St Paul.
He is credited with authoring the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, making his the largest written contribution to the New Testament.
He was one of St Paul’s most constant, faithful and invaluable travelling companions, accompanying him on (and recording) his missionary journeys, and then remaining by his side during his imprisonment in Rome.
His writings uniquely emphasise Christ’s compassion for the poor and the marginalised; and Christian tradition honours him as thefirst icon painter, making him thepatron saint of both doctors and artists.
