Water Saving Tips

Leckhampton Parish Church

Water is a precious gift from God to treasure, protect and share

It’s better to take a shower rather than a bath. Spend less time under the shower. If a bath, make it shallow. (Family members could follow each other, using the same water).
Remember to fill your kettle with only the water you need.
Avoid running taps – they can waste up to 6 litres per minute. Fix leaking taps.
Use a cup of water when brushing your teeth.
Rinse vegetables in a washing-up bowl, and use the waste water in the garden. Similarly, if washing up, the water can be used for plants and may help control greenfly and blackfly.
When needing cold water, instead of running until it is cold, keep a jug in the fridge. For hot water, collect the first tepid water for the garden.
Fit low flow aerators on taps and showers.
Small plastic bottles can be used as funnels. Cut off their bases and sink them in the soil, with the cut end at soil level, to direct water to the roots of newly planted shrubs and trees.
Don’t use sprinklers in the garden, use a watering can or fit a trigger nozzle on your hosepipe to control the flow and reduce wastage. Water plants in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation.
Use shorter programmes on washing machines.
Place a container in the shower to collect water that would otherwise be wasted when you are waiting for it to get warm enough to shower in – you can use the saved water for plants.
