Information about Safeguarding Training and Checks

“Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless.”

Proverbs 31.8

We ALL have a duty as Christians to protect those who are vulnerable, including children, young people and vulnerable adults.

As part of that protection it is important that everyone involved in the life of St Peter’s undergoes the appropriate checks and training.

Important ways in which we keep everyone safe are by carrying out DBS checks and by undergoing Safeguarding Training.

DBS Checks

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is a non-departmental public body of the Home Office of the United Kingdom. The DBS helps employers to make safer recruitment decisions each year by processing and issuing DBS checks for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

DBS also maintains the Adults’ and Children’s Barred Lists and decides whether an individual should be included on one or both lists and barred from engaging in regulated activity.

The following groups of people at St Peter’s are examples of those who need to undergo a Standard or an Enhanced DBS check:

  • PCC Members
  • Youth/Junior Church leaders (where no parent/carer is present)
  • Licensed worship leaders (vicars, readers)
  • those leading training activities which may involve children or young people (choir practice, bell-ringing training)

You will be informed if the role you undertake means you are eligible for a DBS check.

Safeguarding Training

The Church of England National Safeguarding Team has created a new range of training modules for people who undertake roles within churches to complete. These should be completed, every 3 years according to the level of training required for the role.

  • Basic Awareness – covers the basics of safeguarding and enables someone to understand the connections with the Christian faith and the Church’s ministry. It is open for anyone to complete, regardless of their role, including members of congregations.
  • Foundation – builds on the Basic Awareness module and the aims are “To enable learners to contribute to, and implement, good safeguarding practice within church and community contexts.”
  • Leadership Training – aimed at those in a Leadership role. Clergy, Licensed Readers and Parish Safeguarding Officers should complete this training. It is also required for those in specific leadership roles in a parish setting. This is a course taught over zoom or face to face, and requires pre work to be completed.

Click here to see a list of roles and recommended training.

You can access the online training here: https://safeguardingtraining.cofeportal.org/.
You will need to register first (please click on ‘Create New Account’ and follow the instructions).
Please email the Parish Office (parishofficeleck@gmail.com) once you have completed any training, so that St Peter’s can keep a record of your training.
